Update 0.6: Badges & other Improvements

This post is long overdue, as I pushed the 0.6 update over a week ago. I’ve just been extremely busy and I’ve been very sick.

So… let’s get in to it, shall we?

What’s new in 0.6? Glad you asked!

  • BADGES!!Users can now collect badges based on things they do, how their collection is shaping up, how their wishlist looks, etc. You can get badges for all sorts of things. I plan on adding a few badges a week, as well as some specialty one-off badges for things like adding movies on the dates they were released. As of right now, only two badges exist. You get one for joining during the beta period and another one for having over $1000 of movies in your collection. I plan on expanding on the badges concept more over the next few weeks.
  • Easier Signup & LoginI changes the signup and login system to ask for email and password. What’s cool is that if you don’t have an account, an account is automatically made for you. Pretty snazzy.
  • New Collection LayoutYou may have noticed that on the collection pages, it shows the newest additions at the top of the list. This was a requested feature and there it is.

In addition to the major features, there were a ton of rewrites and internal bug fixes. I’ve almost got everything worked out and am ready to start working on things for the 0.7 update. The 0.7 update will focus on users being able to interact with eachother as well as expand the information on the movie pages and go a little more in depth with badges.

Stay tuned. Cool things are coming.

SDR! iPhone / iPod touch Web App Launched

So, while showing Super DVD Robot! to my friend, Nick, this week, he immediately asked me “is it formatted for iPhone?”. At first, I didn’t understand the question. Mobile Safari (the iPhone browser) renders pages pretty accurately and therefore there really isn’t a need for an iPhone web app “version”. But then, as I watched him use the site, I got it. There was too much double-tap-to-zoom-in-on-an-element going on.

No es bueno.

So I built this. It’s a little quick and dirty, but it works and it looks good (to me).

I also think our movie pages are going to become more useful and valuable to mobile users as they use the site while out and about. See a movie you want? You’ll be able to hit the SDR! Marketplace (still coming) to see if anyone in your area is selling their copy before you drop $29.99 on the Blu-ray. Setup in-store pickups, view friends’ wishlists while out birthday shopping, etc.

Not to mention all of the data we have planned for the movie page.

This is going to be great and we hope you guys enjoy it.

As always, please please PLEASE let us know if you have ideas or something isn’t working the way you expect it to. We’re all about interfacing to make things better.

Thanks,
Alex

Coming Soon…

I’m too lazy to keep a traditional “developer roadmap”. Instead I keep an organized task list and stick to the due dates and tasks. No feature creep!

New Theme! I call it… “two.”

theme_preview_two hosted by Ember

So I was working on a freelance gig and thinking about doing some stuff for my day job and this just sort of came out of it and wasn’t appropriate for any of those things, but felt very good for Super DVD Robot!

Also, I realized that the way I coded the site together, I already had a built in theming system. So this went from PSD to SDR! theme in only a couple of hours. This is cool, should I decide to get festive (I won’t.) some day.

Moving along…

The name of this theme is called “two.”, because it comes I renamed the original (aka “default”) theme to “one.”

This theme is about 200px narrower, because I’ve come to find that a lot of you are on tiny monitors. Likely those horrid netbooks that people keep buying or to a lesser extent a high school classroom PC. Either way, I hate both user bases evenly. Speaking of analytics, the three of you logging in on IE6 better knock it off.

I digress… “two.” is thinner, for smaller monitors, a bit more fluid, and very blue. I didn’t realize until after I was done and inspecting it that it looked like a Best Buy employee. There’s also some CSS3 love going on, if your browser happens to support that stuff.

I plan on tweaking some of the widgets over the next week or so to make everything a bit prettier and make the interface a bit friendlier.

Welp… that’s all the news for now. Retweet. Tell your friends. Print this page out and deliver it to your co-workers.

First Big(ish) Update: Here’s what’s new and what was fixed

I’m gonna call this version 0.5.1, I think. I fixed a ton of things and made a lot of changes that I wanted to make a while ago. Most of the fixes and changes are under the hood, but I’ll still go through what’s different and what’s better.

Better Search

Searching is a huge element of Super DVD Robot! as it is currently the only way to add movies to your collections and wishlists (this is changing very soon). Now, more relevant items are pushed to the top of the search results. No more digging through 50+ pages to get to ‘Up’. If you like, you can now also sort by release date and running time. I plan to add more search criteria, but for now, this is what was suggested and I’m only one guy. You can also sort by format. Great if you want to filter out DVDs or Blu-rays in your search.

New Movie Action Widget

The movie action widget is that thing you see that lets you quickly add movies to your wishlist or collection, as well as rate them. Now, most of the changes are under the hood, but what I’ve done will allow me to quickly expand the action bar site-wide and turn off features if something goes buggy. You may not realize it, but the new Movie Action Widget (need to rename that to something cooler.. DragonWidget, maybe?) is used to display every movie on the site, now. This is going to be really cool when you see what I have in store for the near future.

It’s also prettier, now and uses some icons instead of checkboxes and text.

New Home Page

This was mostly to get rid of that issue where the Vimeo was blocking the login. All that should be good, now. A lot of the home page will be changing as I add new features. As for now, I want to focus on the blog, the new people, and the discussion board. Before January is over, I plan to add all kinds of cool stuff that will actually be useful.

New User Action Widget

Like the Movie Action Widget, the user action widget has been overhauled to be more universal, heavily modular, and look prettier. Now you can see how many movies a user has right from the action bar. And as for the “Action” part of “User Action Bar”? Well… stay tuned for all that. I know it’s obvious that you all want to be able to friend each other on this thing, but I asked myself “why?” and came up with a bunch of cool things that are going to make this very fun to use.

The Way We Interact with Best Buy’s APIs

A few of you have reported getting an error when searching for things. This is because we’re asking Best Buy for too much information at a time. So, I’ve revamped the way the site “talks” to Best Buy’s system and hopefully we shouldn’t see any more problems. Not only that, but we should be able to build up our own database exponentially faster than before. Once we have a nice, hearty database of information, we can start offering up our own information that you won’t be able to find anywhere else.

So what’s next?

Glad you asked. I have a lot of cool things planned for the social side of Super DVD Robot! and have features lined up to start filling out the movie pages to make them the absolute most informative movie pages on the web. Seriously… you’ll never hit IMDB or Wikipedia, again, once the movie page is 100%.

Lists are coming. This was a feature that I was working on for the original Super DVD Robot! (I’ll have to write a blog about SDR!s history, later) but never completed. Well, I’m much smarter and much better at this than I was back then and you can bet that lists are coming and they’re coming VERY soon.

More information on the user profiles is coming. You may not realize this, but as you build up your collections and wishlists, Super DVD Robot! is analyzing your collection and silently judging how many hip-hop dance movies you own. We have some fun things planned with that. Most likely, I will simply flesh out the user bio section to include more info like your favorite actor, favorite genre, etc. etc. We could probably turn it into an automated quiz, but why?

Facebook and Twitter integration is coming. This was meant to be a launch feature, but I scrapped it because it seemed like a bad idea to announce your every move to your Facebook and Twitter friends. So I had to go back to the drawing board and figure out an better way to go about it.

Oh.. there’s one more thing just one more thing… BADGES!!

That’s right! We’re bringing back badges, but this time, I’m actually going to launch the badge system. This is going to bring a whole new level of fun to collecting movies. Badges will work like you would expect them to. There are goals to earn each badge. The goals will be secret because I don’t want people cheating and I plan on adding a few new badges every once in a while to keep people on their toes.

Again, thanks for enjoying Super DVD Robot! and huge thanks if you’ve told your friend or Fan’d us on Facebook or followed us on Twitter. These little things go a long way with making the site bigger and better.

THANKS! ~Alex

PS: To the tech nerds.. I plan on moving to a cloud-based server and enhancing the database so everything will run much smoother. Right now, my goal is to get this bad boy to 1.0 and able to run well enough on lowest-common-denominator hardware.

Blog Entry! This is what’s going on…

Okay, so thanks to everyone that is using the site and reporting things they like and don’t like. I can’t stress enough how important it is to get feedback from you guys. Seriously, any issue, problem, or suggestion you have don’t hesitate to tell us about it.
Support & Feedback
I encourage you to use the support site (http://support.superdvdrobot.com) to file these things. This makes it MUCH easier for me to track issues and resolve them quickly. You can tweet problems to us, bu I have a tendency to forget to log the tweet as a bug, as I mostly check Twitter from my phone.

You can also email things to support@superdvdrobot.com.
Facebook & Twitter
I love Facebook and Twitter. I’m pretty heavy with the tweets because I tend to like that method of updating you guys and I can be a bit more haphazard about what I tell you guys. I’m not very secretive and I often tweet screenshots and videos of things I’m working on.

If you aren’t already, follow us on Twitter (@superdvdrobot / twitter.com/superdvdrobot)
As for Facebook, we could really use more fans. If you’re on Facebook and you’re not a fan of ours, head over there and get that all sorted out. We may have Facebook-exclusive content at some point and you’re gonna be sad if you miss out on that.

Here’s our Facebook Page -> http://cld.ly/36109q
Finally… Thanks and just try to bare with us as we work out the kinks…
It doesn’t say anywhere on the site, but this is a beta. We’re working with a lot of new things that haven’t been tested and as we find things broken and get support reports, I can iron out all the kinks and make things.

ONE MORE THING… here’s a brief list of stuff I’m working on.
  • Retooling the search. - better, more relavant search results, filtering options, and a better layout.
  • New home page - sorry about that Vimeo thing, guys. New home page layout coming to fix all that
  • Collection/Wishlist grid view + sorting options + pagination
  • I have a ton of new features coming, too, but I don’t want to reveal them, yet. Watch the Twitter for screens and video and whatnot :)

Support!

The new support system is up and running. Powered by Tender (www.tenderapp.com), which is really nice. We can track things a lot better and interact a lot quicker and effectively than using GetSatisfaction or UserVoice (oh snap! no he di’in’t!). Yes. I did.

Moving along, let’s get into the info.
You can access our sexy new support stuffs at http://support.superdvdrobot.com

Did I mention that you can also email us your problems? Well you totes can.
Problems should go to problems@superdvdrobot.com,
Questions should go to questions@superdvdrobot.com,
and Suggestions should go to junkmail@superdvdrobot.com. Heh, no I’m just kidding. You can send suggestions to suggestions@superdvdrobot.com.

Thanks!

Call Us! (Not really)

So, not sure why you’d ever want to call us, but in the event that you just HAVE to call us up to tell us how terrible we are, you can now do so.
Our sweet number is (540) 328-0285

And yes, it is power’d by Google Voice, meaning we will likely reply to SMS messages more than anything and merely skim through voicemails, unless its something urgent.
The plan is to convert this to some kind of support outlet over time. But for now, it’s mostly for receiving prank calls, so HAVE AT IT!

COMING SOON: The SDR! Marketplace

You’ve been purchasing movies for years and, let’s be honest, when you mull over your collection, there are some regrets. Did you really need to purchase ‘I, Robot’? Is that ‘300’ purchase looking like a solid buy, even after seeing it on TNT every single weekend?
Wouldn’t it be nice if there were a tool to help you offload the excess items in your collection, and maybe even help earn a buck or two?

Well, that’s the idea behind the Super DVD Robot! Marketplace. Soon, users will be able to flag their items as ‘For Sale’ and even set an asking price. It’s that simple. Super DVD Robot! takes care of the rest, by cataloging and sorting all of your items to make them easy to find. We’ll even be going an extra step to make it known to people that are looking for your movies that they can get them on the cheap.
A few things to note:
For the first week or so of the Marketplace, we’ll be playing by Craigslist rules and keeping the Marketplace browsing to local areas, only. This means that when you see an item you want to purchase from another SDR! user, you’ll send them a message, agree on a price, and arrange an in-person transaction in a safe, public, well-lit place.

We plan to do it this way for a very short while until we can roll out all of the features still being developed for the SDR! Marketplace.
Stay tuned for more updates on the SDR! Marketplace and future SDR! features and services.
